    As a common name, “calla” is also generally given to several species of the genus Zantedeschia, which are often called calla lilies. All native to South Africa, the most important is the common florist’s calla (Z. aethiopica), a stout herb with a fragrant white spathe and arrow-shaped leaves that spring from a thick rootstock. It is a popular indoor plant and is grown commercially for cut flowers. The golden, or yellow, calla lily (Z. elliottiana), with more heart-shaped leaves, and the pink, or red, calla lily (Z. rehmannii) are also grown. The spotted, or black-throated, calla lily (Z. albomaculata), with white-spotted leaves, has a whitish to yellow or pink spathe that shades within to purplish brown at the base.alla, either of two distinct kinds of plants of the arum family (Araceae). The genus Calla contains one species of aquatic wild plant, C. palustris, which is known as the arum lily, water arum, or wild calla. It occurs widely in wet places in cool north temperate and subarctic regions and grows readily in mud or shallow water along pond edges or watercourses. A handsome plant, it has heart-shaped leaves, showy white floral leaves (spathes), and clusters of brilliant red berries. The juice of C. palustris is violently poisonous.

    Thank you for your informative videos. My question is regarding a huge jade that was already planted in the landscape when we moved in. The trunk is big and fat. I’d like to have it be smaller but I’m afraid to cut big fat stems. Should I just start over or is it salvageable? Thank you so much. My others live inside as houseplants.

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener 2 дня назад

      Try pruning the big Jade in sections, not all at once. In that way, you can gradually minimise it without bringing the whole plant down.

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener 2 дня назад

      Sorry to hear that. Just check that it the mould is not a fungal attack. A fungal attack sometime causes mushy leaves near the crown. If it is a fungal attack remove all the mushy leaves and spray the plant and the ground around it with fungicide or Neem spray. With Neem you would have to repeat the application every two weeks until it clears.

    Just found your channel and video on osteospernum because I have two plants here in Arizona USA zone 8b and it is August 3,2024 and they both flushed out besutifully but now sporadically blossoms and have gotten leggy. I’ve tried just dead heading but still looks spindles so I gave it a pretty good pruning hoping it will flush back out. Did I kill them? We still have a couple of more months of warm weather.

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener 9 дней назад

      Hi Michele, No I don't think you have killed them. A good pruning means your plant will become bushier and that is a good thing. Normally if a plant gets leggy it is an indication that it is not getting enough sunlight. Also when there is not enough sunlight you won't get enough blooms. Try move it gradually, start with morning sun and then gradually into a sunny spot.

      Sorry for the late response. After division you could leave the agapanthus to harden or repot the agapanthus and withhold watering the repotted agapanthus for a few days. I normally just go ahead and divide and never had a problem. Will add in the description about hardening the divided agapanthus.

    Please how did you treat rust on cannas? ❤❤.

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener 9 дней назад

      Hi Canna rust is a fungi and it thrives on plants. You actually don't know that your plant is infected as the spores hide on the underside. They thrive in humid conditions, that why its important to water the soil and not the foliage. They thrive in conditions that have bad air circulation.. you need to trim some foliage. You can use a Neem solutions. It works but you will need to apply every two weeks until your plants are clear. Depending on how bad the rust attack is, you could visit your garden center and get a fungicide. Check out my episode on the Canna Rust on the Redsoil Gardener channel.

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener 9 дней назад

      Hello Susan I did cover propagation, through division of the rhizome check 16.10 onwards. To collect the seeds, you need to get the spent flower and allow it to dry. The seeds come from the yellow centre. Remove the seeds, fill your seed tray or small pot with well draining soil, sprinkle your seed on top of the soil mix and then cover it lightly with soil. Keep soil moist not soggy and place it in a warm area and provide bright indirect light. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    Thank you for my introduction to the Walking Iris. I absolutely love it and will search for them. Hopefully, I can create a designated area for them next year. I had already started researching other Irises & odd Lilies too. (Bertha S.)

      You are so welcome Bertha. The beauty of walking Irises is that they are so easu to propagate their plantlets as seen in the episode. Happy Gardening dear Friend.

      Also I think it varies as to where it it is processed. This vermiculite as seen in the episode was processed in Kenya.

      Thanks for sharing. Vermiculite varies in colour from golden colour to blackish in colour. I believe they do start as cylindrical and as it breaks down it flakes.
